Smiths Station was established in the early 1800s when the Central of Georgia Railway extended service to Opelika. The community took its name from a prominent early resident, Broadus Smith. In the mid-1800s, Dr. O.D. Smith of Vermont moved to the area and became teacher and principal of Smiths Station’s first schoolhouse. By 1873, Dr. Smith was a mathematics professor at Auburn College, later Auburn University. There is now a campus building named after him. Smiths Station was incorporated as a city in 2001.

Another prominent resident of Smiths Station is country legend Conway Twitty, who attended high school here.
