The name of Wetumpka comes from the Muscogee Creek language. It means “rumbling waters” and likely refers to the rapids of the Coosa River. In the 18th century, Fort Toulouse was built by French settlers on the spot where Wetumpka would be founded. The French traded there by ceded the fort to the British after the French and Indian War. England then ceded the area after the U.S. won its independence. Wetumpka was incorporated in 1834 and soon became a cotton boom town.
Wetumpka is the site where a 1,000-foot meteorite struck the earth 80 million years ago. The impact led to the release of energy, roughly equivalent to 175,000 nuclear bombs.
