Propane Safety

How to respond to a gas leak and keep your family safe

Propane has an exceptional safety record. There are vigorous government regulations, and our industry has the highest standards for protecting our customers.

As a general rule, propane is safe for a wide range of home uses. Still, it is essential for you to stay informed about proper safety measures and know how to respond in the rare event of a propane leak on your property. The team at Superior Gas, Inc., is committed to safeguarding your well-being, and we’re always available to help you use our product correctly and respond to any safety concerns.

How can you detect a propane leak?

While propane does not have a natural scent, it is packaged with an odorant that smells like rotten eggs, spoiled meat or a skunk’s spray. This makes it much easier to identify a gas leak. However, we still recommend that you install UL-listed propane gas detectors near all your propane products. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — though essential for your home — won’t detect a propane leak.

How should you respond to a propane leak?

If you smell gas or receive an alert from a gas detector, don’t panic. Follow the safety steps below, and you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe, all while protecting your property.

The Propane Education and Research Council has produced some incredibly useful videos to keep you informed on best practices for propane safety. You can watch them below. And never hesitate to contact the Superior Gas team for added guidance.
