How Long Do Water Heaters Last?

Learn the Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater

water heater Piedmont, ALYou probably don’t think much about your water heater—until there’s no hot water. Like your fridge, it works hard every day, year-round, without much fanfare. But life would be pretty unpleasant without access to hot water for too long. If you’ve owned your water heater for a while—or you’re not sure how old it is—you might want to start thinking about how long your water heater will last.

Most tank-type water heaters will last about 10 years before efficiency and performance start to decline.

Here’s how to tell if you need to replace your water heater.

How Old Is Your Tank?

Not sure how old your tank is? It’s easy to check its age using the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker. The first letter in the serial number corresponds to its month of production; the first two numbers are the year of production.

For example, if the serial number on your water heater is H102738598, the “H” is the eighth letter in the alphabet and corresponds to August, the eighth month. The “10” stands for the year. So, the water heater was manufactured in August of 2010.

5 Telltale Signs

There are five strong signs that your water heater is reaching the end of its lifespan:

  1. Higher energy bills: Your equipment has to work harder to heat water and maintain the temperature. You may also notice the water isn’t as hot.
  2. Rusty water: This is a major danger sign because it means your water heater is corroding from within. Corrosion can lead to tank failure and costly damage.
  3. Leaks: If you notice water around the base of your water tank, the likely culprit is a leak. Turn off the tank’s water supply and contact us right away for an inspection.
  4. Rumbling noises: Sediment buildup in the tank causes noises and reduces efficiency. Left untreated, it leads to corrosion and shortens the lifespan.
  5. Hard water issues: Extra minerals in hard water cause lime buildup, reducing efficiency and life expectancy. Even water softeners, while helpful, can sometimes shorten a tank’s lifespan.

Repair or Replace?

If any of those signs sound familiar, and you want to start thinking about replacing your water heater, you should consider updating from a tank-style unit to a high-efficiency tankless water heater. Repairs can make sense for newer equipment, but for older water heaters, replacing it makes more financial sense. That’s because today’s high-efficiency tankless water heaters will save you money in the long run.

Tankless water heaters offer several advantages:
